2022 April Devlog: New Designs!

Hey ya'll!

So a lot has happened since last month. As mentioned in the previous devlog, I had gotten to a play test stage when making the rough layouts. I realized the game had some major issues regarding the story and pacing.

I want to give a special shout out to Captain Toad and Valor52 (two of my team members) who've been a huge life savior! And thank you to the rest of my team,it's amazing to get feedback and see this story develop.

Anyway, back to Angel's story. I feel some major issues I've had with the story were addressed and now a new outline has been written. While not 100% perfect yet, I feel I'm almost ready for the full script rewrite.

I don't have a lot of progress I can tangibly show as so much of it is story writing, but I can say I am extremely happy with the amount of progress and improvements.

I have two pieces of big news!

1) The demo has expanded greatly! Captain Toad brought up that the mini-demo didn't have Toriel -and what's an Undertale game without the Undertale Cast? (Specifically when they're in the fan-game, no shade to the games who don't have canon characters for whatever reason)

So now, instead of just covering the "tutorial" portion of Act 1, it's expanded to include the first third of Act 1 instead.

2) The main cast has gotten design updates! I've struggled with the designs of this game's cast, but I'm finally happy with these changes. My design principle was this: it should be detailed when up close, but simple enough for over-world sprites from a distance. I used real early middle ages clothing for reference (while still keeping it fantastical)

The Angel's Lullaby main cast. Toriel, a young adult boss monster in medieval dress. It's blue with a red stripe at the bottom. She is looking confident. The player character, a blue zombie, wears a torn up cape. Next is a Border Collie Dog, happily wagging its tail. Then there's the Knight, a blue skinned human with black and white religious robes and a purple cape that's also torn. Lastly is Elis, a tanned skinned human with dark hair. They're wearing a blue cape with arm openings. On their face is a golden star that covers their expression.

Now, to get a little more into the writing, Act 1 focuses on Tori.

A cartoony depiction of Toriel and the player character, both happily drinking some magical blue drink. They're surrounded by golden flowers and butterflies. In the air, gold sparkles fill the air.

Specifically, her growing friendship with the player character. As a young adult, Tori is a lot more free spirited and boisterous than her adult self. She's just the energetic person to pull the player into some wacky hijinks!
